3D Mammography

A 3D mammogram, also known as breast tomosynthesis (tomo), is an advanced exam that links multiple breast x-rays to create a three-dimensional image of the breast.

3D mammogram

A 3D mammogram is beneficial when looking for breast cancer in people who have no signs or symptoms. Tomo is also useful to investigate the cause of breast problems, such as a breast mass, pain and nipple discharge.

Associated Radiologists introduced 3D mammography in its clinics in 2017.  It is our goal to have the best equipment available for our patients.

3D Mammography is an invaluable tool as it enables practitioners to see developments in the breast up to two years before it would be possible during a physical exam.

Did you know? It is widely recommended that women over 40, or those with a family history of breast cancer, receive annual mammograms.

What do I need to know before going in for a 3D mammogram?

  • Do not wear deodorant, perfume, antiperspirant, lotions or body powder on the day of the exam (this can create issues in the mammogram images)

  • To avoid the need to fully undress during the examination, please  wear a two-piece outfit such as jeans and a shirt

Did you know? The best time to get a mammogram is one week after your period.

What will happen during the mammography/tomosynthesis procedure?

For tomosynthesis imaging the machine will be taking several images from a variety of angles to create the 3D image. The examination should take about 30 minutes. You may experience some discomfort as the breast is compressed during the exam.
